Music and Museum: Giacometti, Flora, and Jazz

This event is no longer on sale.

Sunday October 29

6:00 PM  –  8:00 PM

Pianist and Jazz at the Bechtler fan favorite Noel Friedline joins the Bechtler Ensemble, led by Tanja Bechtler, to merge the soulful notes of jazz with the Ensemble’s focus on classical music. This concert is inspired by the Bechtler’s exhibition Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler: Flora, which features the Swiss American duo’s multimedia project based on their discoveries about the previously unknown American artist Flora Mayo, who studied in Paris in the 1920s alongside the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, and with whom she had a romantic relationship. In homage to the jazz age in Paris, the Ensemble will perform the renowned “Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio,” a crossover composition by the French jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and occasional actor, Claude Bolling. Referencing the international community of musicians living in Paris in the 1920s and ‘30s, other highlights of the program include compositions by Astor Piazzolla, an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger, and by the trailblazing African-American composer William Grant Still.
